1st Pharmaceutical Industry Launched In Liberia

The phase one of the Global Pharmaceutical Manufacturing and Laboratories Limited (Pvt) has been launched in Liberia intended to provide quality drugs across the country.
However, the March 21, 2023 launch is the first GMP certified pharmaceutical industry established in Liberia.
The Pvt. Limited located in Bushrod Island with manufacturing capability of various dosages forms is headed by Dr. Nelson Oniyama and partner Fayaz Ahmad as Director of Operations.
The Pvt. Limited has achieved Quality Standards like ISO-9001-2015 for quality management systems, ISO-14001-2015 for Environmental management systems and ISO 45001- 2018 for Occupational health and safety management systems.
During the official launch of the Pvt. Limited, the Managing Director, Alvin Oniyama elaborated that samples of each of their products were collected and tested by LMHRA, an agency of government responsible to ensure only quality medicines are available in Liberia and receive highest standards qualifications in their grades.
In a quest to reach international standards, Mr. Oniyama maintained that the authorities of the LMHRA and the company has agreed to further verified testing at the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) laboratories.
He stressed that the process was made possible by USAID through the auspices of its Mission Director, Jim Wright, noting that their products received the highest standard qualifications in their four grades.
MD Oniyama extended his thanks and appreciation to President George M. Weah for personally reaching out and expressing his government’s fullest support for their effort to establish the facility.
He also extolled the Managing Director of the Liberia Medicines and Health Products Regulatory Authority, Keturah C. Smith and her team, because according to him, through their support, Global Pharmaceutical is now the first GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) 3 certified Pharmaceutical Company established in Liberia, and with majority Liberian ownership.
Mr. Oniyama also praised USAID through the United States Pharmacopeia (USP/PQM) for their technical and moral support as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) Liberia Representative and team for the high level of collaboration as well as Ecobank Liberia for providing them credit facilities to support their efforts to a great extent in financing their project.
Vice President Jewel Howard-Taylor thanked Dr. Oniyama and team for the construction and the launch of the Pvt. Limited in the country which she said will enable government save funding being used to purchase life-saving drugs.
According to VP Taylor, with the launch of the Pvt., she is of the conviction that Liberia, in the not too distance future, will get involved in exporting quality and affordable drugs.
She then urged the company and team to ensure that the necessary safety measures for workers are put into place as well as the maintenance of a safe environment; on grounds that, health is wealth.
Meanwhile, Health Minister Wilhelmina Jallah thanked the Pvt Limited CEO for the farsightedness which according to her came at the time most needed.
She then pledged the government’s fullest support through the Ministry of Health for the smooth running and protection of the facility on grounds that it will help ease the burden government normally goes through for the purchase of life-saving drugs.
