The Standard Bearer of the Unity Party Joseph Nyuma Boakai has condemned the attack on Students at the University of Liberia terming the action by Representative Acarious Gray as an irresponsible and an unnecessary provocation by a ranking official of the Ruling CDC Party.
The former Vice President said problems of violence at the University of Liberia continue to occur especially within the last five years because of the inability of the CDC Government to investigate and produce findings each time violence happens on the campus of the University.
It can be recalled that on August 2, 2021, students at the University of Liberia sustained injuries when police moved in to disperse a demonstration by students against the e-learning instituted by UL authorities that students believed was new and difficult.
On July 26, 2022, while the official Independence Day ceremony was being held at the Centennial Memorial Pavilion, violence erupted between the campus-based Student Unification Party, SUP and pro-government group under the banner, the CDC Council of Patriots.
Pictures from the scene of the violence showed a SUP member being beaten and tortured, resulting into injuries. Reports of these investigations have not been made public.
He pointed out that even though students do not have the right to determine who visits the university campus, it is equally important that government officials do not worsen the situation by making irresponsible utterances and clearly setting the stage for violence in an academic environment.
The former Vice President has therefore called on the Government of Liberia and Authorities at the University of Liberia to ensure that peace is restored on the campus of the UL and that the Student Unification Party is constructively engaged by the Government and other stakeholders to find an amicable solution to a situation that could undermine the peace and stability of the nation.
