The House of Representatives has instructed its Ways, Means and Finance committee to review a request seeking the purchasing of vehicles for each county detachment of the Liberia National Police through the Fiscal Year 2023 Draft National Budget.
Grand Bassa County District 3 Representative, Matthew Joe, made the request on Tuesday, January 31, during the 5th day sitting of the first quarter of the 6th session of the 54th Legislature.
“If you take a cursory look at the 15 political subdivisions including my county, Grand Bassa, you will realize that the Police, which is the input device of our criminal justice system, lacks vehicles across the length and breadth of our country,” he alerted.
Representative Joe said a fortnight ago, the Police in Bong, Lofa, Nimba, Gbapolu, Rivergee, Grand Bassa, among others, appealed for vehicles in order to enhance their respective duties and functions.
He said considering the logistical challenges of the police coupled with the wave of crimes in Liberia ahead of the 2023 general and Presidential elections, there is an appealing need for this august body to consider purchasing vehicles for each county for the Liberian National Police Detachment through the National Budget.
Meanwhile, the Joint Legislative Ways, Means and Finance earlier Tuesday commenced the revenue hearings into the draft national budget occasioning the expenditure hearing.
At the end of these proceedings, the joint committee will report to plenary pending subsequent action.
