Security Harassment Or Inspection?

By Solomon T. Gaye Sr.
Report emanating from Nimba County says that the Fire Service has launched an inspection in the wake of President George Weah’s visit in the county.
The inspection being carried out mainly at business centers kicked off on July 11, 2022 in Ganta as Fire Service stormed various business centers asking for fire equipment in accordance with the Fire Service policy in the country.
During the unprecedented inspection exercise, His Grace Business Center CEO, Paul Zuopeawon, frowned at the Fire Service Police for using the President’s presence to harass the business community in the name of inspection in the county.
According to CEO Zuopeawon explained that a group of Fire Service entered his entity without informing anybody demanding to bring out all fire documents or pay US$20, 00 for not having the document.
According to Zuopeawon, the inspection of fire equipment is welcoming news for the business community in Ganta, but should not have been executed during President Weah’s visit in the county.
Ganta is among the 15 counties in Liberia that boasts of many Liberians operating their own businesses in the absence of fire Service Trucks in case of any fire disaster in the county.
During the beginning of 2022, fire gutted several business centers on the main street in Ganta and there have been no official reports from the sub office of the Fire Service about the cause of the fire incident.
When this paper contacted the Fire Service County Commander in Nimba via mobile phone, he explained that the team was not on inspection but was only doing awareness and remained tight-lipped on whether fees were attached to the inspection of business centers.
