In an effort to strengthen all partisans regardless of regional affiliations, the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) on Wednesday identified with the party’s Muslim women ahead of the celebration of ABRAHAM DAY that is celebrated by Muslims globally.
The huge gathering of Muslim women among other things was intended to deliver President George Weah’s message for women in the party.
Speaking to the women at a brief program held at CDC’s Headquarters, Party National Chairman, Mulbah Morlu stressed that the Party identified with Muslim women with a donation of 100 bags of rice, one cow for soup and US$1,000 dollars.
“We have come today to identify with you. On behalf of the President, I want to give this 100 bags of rice to our mothers and sisters with one cow Plus USD$1000 to celebrate that day, ”Morlu said.
The ceremony brought together hundreds of Muslim women to the party’s headquarters which among other things, further paved the party’s relationship with the Islamic community.
Morlu appraised the Islamic religion for the role played in the democratic process and called on the women to remember the workings of the government in their respective prayers.
According to Chairman Morlu, the Muslims’ contribution to the party backed candidate, Cllr. Joseph Jallah helped him to obtain more votes in their populated communities in Lofa County signals a level of commitment to the party.
Morlu said, the President has instructed the party to have 40% threshold for women position in the pending General and Legislative Elections.
As per the President’s decision which has been approved by the party’s National Executive Committee, the party has announced 40% seats for women only , this means, for instance in Montserrado, we have 17 districts and out of the 17 districts, women will exclusively have seven districts where only women will do primaries to select the best for the party.
“The President said he wants to see more women in the Legislature; you can be a government official or a lawmaker. You can make good decisions even if you don’t know book. We will protect women in the elections if your community can support you,” Morlu said.
Quoting the President, Morlu said recently that President Weah announced to the public a new party’s policy that is going forward; it is not only the men who should have positions on party and positions in government, noting that the same way, he as President is appointing more women in ministries and agencies and the party should incorporate more women to go at the legislature.
The party announced a decision through the President of Liberia for the CDC to have 40% threshold for women.
“This means, all of the positions in CDC, we must also give women the chance to be on some of the positions the same way men get the chance,” he said.
Thanking the party on behalf of the women, the leader of the Muslim women, Madam Ajah Toure thanked the party in a joyous way.
“On behalf of the women that are here today, we have come to say thank you to our leaders. What I want to tell the women here today is let us come together and support the CDC,” she said.
She also recommended that the Party should recognize only Islamic affairs in the party.
“Any other party that comes, we should go under Islamic affairs. Mr. Chairman, anyone that comes individually for Islamic affairs should be sent back to us. Another thing, we want from you is to give us a space that we can settle ourselves,” Madam Toure concluded.
