The Council of Patriots (COP) has officially notified the government through the Ministry of Justice of its July 26 nation-wide protest in Liberia.Speaking to Mohammed Ali via Mobile yesterday, he mentioned that the group’s official communication to the Ministry of Justice is intended to seek security protection for protesters as enshrined in Article 17 of the Liberian constitution which calls for peaceful assembly.
Mr. Ali said he submitted COP’s communication signed by him [Mo Ali] and approved by Henry Costa on July 17, to the Ministry of Justice which was received by an employee of the Ministry identified as James Teah.
The content of the letter states, “The Council of Patriot (COP) has elected to invoke and exercise its constitutional right under Article 17 of the Liberia Constitution to hold a peaceful assembly nationwide beginning July 24, 2019 and continuing beyond.”
It continued; “The purpose of this assembly is a follow-up action to our historic June 7 assembly to ensure that our demands as contained in our petition read out and officially submitted to President Weah are acted upon.”
In conclusion, the letter reminded: “In light of this and as we did for the June 7 action, we hereby formally notified your good offices of our intent and request State security protection for attendees of the assembly. We are open to coming in upon invitation to sit with you and your team to discuss the necessary security protocol for the assembly at your earliest convenience.”
Last week Friday, The COP, organizers of the June 7, protest announced its phase two nation-wide protest underway to demand President George Weah to unconditionally address its June 7, petition submitted to the government.
The Chairperson, Henry Costal said the group’s protest will begin on July 24-26 and will ensure there will be no Independence Day celebrations as there is nothing to show.
