The Gbarpolu County Senator, Armah Jallah, is recommending to the Executive Branch of Government to consider dismissing 28, 000 public servants that were added on government’s payroll without passing through the Civil Servants Agency’s regulations and procedures.
The former president pro-tempore said failure for government to take such decision would make it extremely difficult to diminish government’s bloated payroll as being advised by the International Monetary Funds (IMF).
Senator Jallah’s recommendation was triggered by Minister Samuel Tweah’s assertions that the Civil Servants’ Act was violated in 2009-2010 when the agency was undermined thereby giving such power to Ministers and heads of agencies.
Minister Tweah alluded that such violation of the agency’s mandate was effected under the former President, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf’s administration which according to him, provoked the swelling of payrolls.
IMF’s findings showed that over 60% of the fiscal budget goes to salary and allowances, something the IMF continues to frown on.
But responding to Tweah, Senator Jallah, admitted that government cannot sustain such huge public wage bill if the CDC-led government’s Pro-poor Agenda for Development as promised by President George Weah to the people of Liberia is to be implemented.
Senator Jallah is however recommending that the Ministry of Finance to allot money in the budget for consultancy as it is being done with the Executive Branch.
According to the former Pro-Temp, it was disgusting to read in past and current budgets that government is allocating millions of dollars for unjustified consultancy solely for the Executive Branch yet, intends to slash civil servants’ salaries; something he described as being very unfair.
Also frowning on the over 73, 000 civil servants, the Grand Kru County Senator, Dr. Peter Coleman, advised the CDC-led government not to dismiss employees as this was similar decision taken by the former President, Madam Johnson-Sirleaf.
