The Inspector General of Police, Gregory Coleman, says two police officers were injured during an operation in Benben Town, Bensonville, aimed at addressing harassment and intimidation reported by residents.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday, Coleman provided updates on the incident and ongoing efforts to restore calm to the community.
According to Coleman, the police received a call from residents of Benben Town over a week ago regarding continuous harassment and intimidation. Law enforcement responded promptly, leading to several arrests, with suspects forwarded to court.
Coleman explained that additional police operations continued on Friday to address lingering unrest and that during their deployment, officers encountered resistance, and gunfire broke out, injuring two officers.
The wounded officers were immediately transported to John F. Kennedy Medical Center (JFK) for treatment.
“As we speak, emergency responders are returning to the scene, and the injured officers are being conveyed to the control center, and the hospital for further care,” Coleman stated.
The Inspector General noted that police operations in the community also involved dispersing a crowd as part of the effort to maintain order.
However, tension remains high, necessitating continued police presence.
“At this point in time, we have not contacted the families of the injured officers, so we cannot release their names,” he added. “I would ask each and every one of us to please pray for the officers.”
IG Coleman assured the public that law enforcement is committed to restoring peace in Benben Town.
“The operation continues to ensure calm and makes certain that there is lasting peace in the community,” he said.
The Liberia National Police is urging residents to cooperate with ongoing investigations and avoid actions that could escalate tensions.
Further updates on the condition of the officers and the progress of the operation will be shared in due course.
