The West African Bar Association (WABA) has announced a major leadership transition following the resignation of its president, Mr. Ousmane Bouba Traore.
Mr. Traore, who cited personal reasons for his immediate departure, leaves behind a legacy defined by his unwavering dedication to justice, regional legal cooperation, and the defense of human rights.
In accordance with the Association’s Constitution, the current vice president, Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah, has assumed the role of Acting president.
Cllr. Varmah is a prominent international trade lawyer and the current president of the Liberian Bar Association. His elevation to Acting president brings seasoned leadership to WABA at a time of both challenge and opportunity.
Speaking during a virtual Executive Committee meeting held on Friday, June 13, Cllr. Varmah expressed gratitude and determination in his new role.
“I am honored to assume this responsibility at such a critical juncture. We remain committed to the shared vision of a just, democratic, and peaceful West Africa. I extend profound gratitude to Mr. Traore for his service, and I look forward to building on the strong foundation he has laid,” he said.
The Executive Committee of WABA reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the Association’s founding principles. It emphasized its ongoing mission to promote the Rule of Law, protect the independence and integrity of the judiciary, and foster legal professionalism throughout the West African region.
In a formal statement, the WABA Secretariat confirmed that all national Bar Associations across West Africa have been officially informed of the leadership change.
The Secretariat also announced plans to convene a General Meeting of Bar leaders in Nigeria, with the date to be announced shortly.
This transition marks a pivotal moment in WABA’s continuing efforts to champion regional legal collaboration and democratic governance. Under Cllr. Varmah’s leadership, the Association aims to deepen its engagement with legal professionals and institutions committed to upholding justice and the rule of law across the sub-region.
