Sierra Leonean Runners Dominate Liberia Marathon 2024 With Host Securing Bronze

The Liberia Marathon 2024 proved to be a remarkable display of unity, resilience, and determination, as the race not only highlighted the athletic prowess of the runners but also showcased the power of sports to bring communities together. Held on Sunday November 24, 2024 the event marked the 6th edition of the race, which attracted over 2,000 participants from more than 20 countries.
The marathon, organized by the Liberia Marathon Trust, kicked off at the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Sinkor and concluded at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex in Paynesville, just outside Monrovia. The event featured multiple categories, including the full marathon, a 10K foot race, 10K wheelchair race, and 10K crutches race. Among the participants were athletes with hearing and visual impairments, who were assisted by guide runners from the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL).
The marathon saw an increase in female participation, with women making up 30 percent of the runners, a notable rise from 23 percent in 2022 and 15 percent in 2021. It also drew a diverse crowd, with competitors from various nationalities racing side by side, further underscoring the international appeal of the event.
At the conclusion of the highly competitive marathon, Sierra Leone emerged triumphant, with two of its runners finishing in first and second place. Liberia secured the third spot, marking a proud achievement for the host nation.
The race was accordingly made possible through a collaborative effort among the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS), Monrovia City Corporation (MCC), Paynesville City Corporation (PCC), Liberia National Police (LNP), and the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL). This inter-agency partnership ensured a smooth and successful event, which organizers hope to grow in future editions, with plans to add more features and elevate the race to new heights.
Participants, including athletes from various professional backgrounds, praised the event’s organizers for their dedication and vision in making the Liberia Marathon a reality. “Your efforts have not only provided a platform for athletes to shine but also inspired countless others to pursue their goals with courage and commitment,” one participant remarked in an interview. “Thank you for shining a spotlight on Liberia and creating memories that will last a lifetime.”
The Liberia Marathon continues to serve as an inclusive event, welcoming participants from all walks of life, and remains a proud occasion for Liberia and the broader sub-region.
