The Maryland Youth Association (MYA) is calling on lawmakers from Maryland County to withdraw from the ongoing speakership battle within the House of Representatives.
The youth group warned that the political turmoil threatens the peace, stability, and progress of the county and the nation.
In a press release issued on April 27, 2025, and confirmed by MYA’s president Melvin Weah during a phone interview, the youth organization emphasized the need for elected officials to prioritize national interest over personal ambition or political affiliation especially in light of a recent opinion by the Supreme Court.
“We, the Maryland Youth Association (MYA), call on our honorable lawmakers in the House of Representatives to desist from engaging in the divisive speakership tussle that threatens to undermine the peace, stability, and progress of our county and nation,” Mr. Weah stated.
The MYA’s statement stressed that at this pivotal moment in Liberia’s democratic journey, it is essential for Representatives to uphold the rule of law and ensure that leadership disputes are resolved through legal, transparent, and constitutional means; not through conflict, coercion, or manipulation.
The organization reminded lawmakers that they carry the hopes and aspirations of not just Maryland County, but Liberia as a whole.
Their actions, MYA noted, directly impact the future of the youth, who depend on leaders to act with integrity, responsibility, and a commitment to maintaining peace and unity.
The group urged lawmakers to focus on pressing national issues rather than political infighting.
It underscored the importance of respecting the authority of the Supreme Court, describing it as the final arbiter of justice in the country.
The MYA, a civil society organization dedicated to promoting good governance, due process, rule of law, peace, and unity, reiterated its appeal for calm and lawful conduct among citizens.
“We have come to remind our lawmakers that they carry the hopes and aspirations of the people of Maryland County and Liberia at large. As such, the future and direction of the youth depend on them. Their actions must reflect integrity, responsibility, and a commitment to preserving the peace and unity we have collectively worked to build,” the statement emphasized.
The MYA urged lawmakers to fulfill their legislative responsibilities and allow due process to prevail in the determination of House leadership.
“Let us not trade peace for power,” the statement said. “Let us build a nation where leadership is earned through service, not struggle.”
