The House of Representatives has agreed with the Liberian Senate on the passage of a new law granting autonomous status to the National Food Assistance Agency (NFAA).
The decision was based on a report from the House Judiciary Committee during its 3rd Day Sitting of the 2nd Quarter of the 2nd Session of the 55th Legislature.
According to Rep. Michael Thomas, Chairperson of the Judiciary Committee, the enactment of the NFAA Act is crucial for promoting food security, reducing poverty, improving public health, and supporting sustainable agriculture.
The legislation also aims to enhance the management and accessibility of food across the country.
“Honorable Members, in light of the government’s goal to sustainably manage food resources and recognizing that the NFAA has the mandate to serve as the logistical arm of the Government of Liberia, it is essential that the agency be granted autonomous status to effectively respond to the demands and evolving landscape of global food security,” Rep. Thomas emphasized.
Following the reading and floor debate on the proposed law, plenary voted to concur with the Senate and instructed the Chief Clerk to proceed accordingly.
