The Margibi University Students Union (MARUSU) has issued an urgent appeal to the Margibi Legislative Caucus and the Government of Liberia to take immediate
action to protect Liberian students currently studying in Israel, who are now caught in the crossfire of the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, MARUSU expressed deep concern for the safety and well-being of their fellow students, particularly
those who recently traveled to Israel for advanced agriculture training at the Arava International Training Centre.
The student union said the intensification of hostilities in the region has placed these students in grave danger, with reports indicating that their situation has
become increasingly precarious.
“Our fellow students find themselves in extreme peril as the war escalates,” said Abel Flomoteh, Secretary General of MARUSU. “The potential for tragedy within
our student community is profound, and immediate intervention is necessary to ensure their safe return home,” he added.
The statement highlighted that the students are currently confined, struggling to access basic necessities amid growing isolation.
With neighboring countries closing their borders to Israel, the students face mounting difficulties in securing safe passage out of the conflict zone.
MARUSU has called on the Margibi legislative caucus to raise these urgent concerns in plenary sessions and to press the Liberian government to engage in
diplomatic negotiations aimed at facilitating the safe evacuation of the students.
The union also urged youth and student organizations, as well as civil society groups, to join in advocating for the welfare of Liberian students abroad.
Prince Gramma Whannah, President of MARUSU, emphasized the need for unity and prayer: “Let us come together in solidarity to pray for their safety and to
demand decisive government action to protect our compatriots.”
The union’s appeal underscores the critical need for swift government intervention to prevent potential tragedy and to uphold Liberia’s responsibility to its citizens
studying overseas.
As the situation continues to evolve, MARUSU says it remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting the affected students and calls on all stakeholders to act
urgently to secure their safe return.
