LNBA Pledges Support To UL President
The leadership of the Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA), headed by president Bornor Varmah, has pledged strong support to the newly appointed president of the University of Liberia, Layli Maparyan, during a courtesy visit.
Dr. Maparyan was appointed by President Joseph Boakai to lead Liberia’s flagship institution of higher learning.
The LNBA on Tuesday, May 27, 2025 congratulated her on the historic appointment and expressed confidence in her ability to transform the University into a hub of academic excellence and innovation.
In its statement, the Bar emphasized the need to preserve the semi-autonomous status of the Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law.
It recommended allowing the Law School to independently secure and manage its finances, under the oversight of the University.
The LNBA also advocated for the revival of international academic exchange programs, including the past partnership with Indiana University, which significantly contributed to legal education in Liberia.
Commending recent disciplinary actions taken by the UL administration against academic malpractice, the LNBA praised the University’s resolve to restore academic integrity.
The Association also welcomed its inclusion in the panel to vet candidates for Dean of the Law School, pledging to appoint its representatives soon.
In her response, Dr. Maparyan thanked the LNBA for its support and highlighted plans to address critical infrastructure challenges, including reliable electricity and water access, and the rehabilitation and construction of key facilities.
She reaffirmed her commitment to raising the University’s standards to meet global benchmarks and welcomed continued collaboration with the LNBA.
Meanwhile, the LNBA extended congratulations to the Government and people of Liberia for the country’s election on June 3, 2025, as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
The Bar described the achievement as a milestone in Liberia’s diplomatic journey and a testament to its growing influence and commitment to global peace and cooperation.
The LNBA urged Liberians to rally behind the government’s efforts on the world stage and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting justice, the rule of law, and good governance at both national and international levels.
