A growing number of Liberian students in India have raised concerns over their safety following escalating military tensions between India and Pakistan.
This comes after India reportedly launched nine airstrikes inside Pakistan early Thursday morning in retaliation to what it described as a “coordinated terrorist attack” allegedly backed by Pakistani elements.
In response, Pakistan’s military command issued a stern warning, vowing a “massive retaliation” in what could spark a full-blown regional conflict.
More than 2,000 Liberian students are currently studying in various Indian cities under academic and technical programs, and many now fear for their safety.
“This is not good news at all,” said one Liberian student leader in New Delhi who preferred anonymity. “If this conflict gets worse, we may be forced to leave and return home.”
India and Pakistan—two nuclear-armed neighbors have a history of bitter conflict, particularly over the disputed Kashmir region. While tensions have flared before, the latest developments suggest a dangerous escalation that could impact thousands of foreign nationals, including Liberians.
Liberia’s Embassy in India is yet to issue an official statement, but sources say it is closely monitoring the situation and may advise students to take precautionary measures.
Meanwhile, parents back in Liberia are expressing growing anxiety, calling on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intervene and ensure the safety of their children abroad.
