The President of the Liberian Basketball Association (LBA), Abraham Samukai, will lead a two-member delegation to the Federation of International Basketball Associations (FIBA) Mid-Term Congress 2025, set to take place from tomorrow May 14 to 18, 2025 in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
This year’s Congress marks a significant milestone as Bahrain hosts the prestigious event for the first time. The occasion is made possible through a strategic partnership between the Bahrain Olympic Committee and the Bahrain Basketball Association. The Congress will gather delegates from all 212 National Member Federations of the International Basketball Federation, serving as a key forum for international basketball development and cooperation.
The Liberian delegation consisting of LBA Samukai and his Secretary General Calvin Diggs is expected to connect in the host city. Diggs departed Liberia late last week to prepare for the meetings, while Samukai is scheduled to depart on Wednesday, May 14.
The Congress will provide a comprehensive overview of FIBA’s activities and achievements since the last Mid-Term Congress held in Manila, Philippines, in 2023. One of the primary topics of discussion will be the progress of the FIBA Plus programs, which have supported 212 National Federations in enhancing their governance, operations, and development strategies throughout 2024.
Another major focus will be on FIBA’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the capacities of National Federations and promote greater inclusivity and gender equity in the sport. Programs such as Her World, Her Rules will be highlighted for their role in encouraging the participation of women and girls in basketball across various regions.
Delegates will also engage in discussions concerning proposed amendments to FIBA’s General Statutes, as well as matters relating to membership, including the ratification of suspensions or expulsions. Honorary distinctions, such as Honorary President and Secretary General Emeritus, are expected to be conferred to individuals who have made distinguished contributions to the global basketball community.
The FIBA Foundation’s Basketball For Good initiative will also feature prominently during the Congress. This program utilizes basketball as a tool for social change, supporting underserved communities through education, inclusion, and empowerment projects. The Foundation’s Board is expected to meet during the Congress to assess ongoing initiatives and chart the course for future efforts.
A major highlight of the event will be the FIBA Hall of Fame induction ceremony on May 17. This year’s class includes three iconic figures: Spanish basketball legend Pau Gasol, American women’s basketball star Dawn Staley, and renowned U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski. Each is being honored for their remarkable contributions to the global development and promotion of basketball.
The Congress serves not only as a platform for strategic planning and governance but also as a celebration of basketball’s power to unite and inspire communities worldwide.
