Representative Marie G. Johnson of Grand Gedeh Electoral District 2 and Senator Thomas Yaya Nimely jointly donated 40 bundles of high-quality zinc to victims of a devastating storm in Palmlow, Putu Administrative District.
The donation follows a severe storm that struck the area in March of this year, leaving numerous homes destroyed and many residents homeless. Despite repeated appeals for government intervention, residents say they had received little to no assistance until this intervention from their local lawmakers.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony, the Home Coordinator in the office of Representative Johnson, Nathaniel Tarley, revealed that the lawmaker had written to the National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) requesting urgent intervention following the disaster.
However, her efforts yielded no significant result, prompting her to personally purchase 20 bundles of zinc to aid the affected residents.
“Even though we expected national support, Rep. Johnson did not wait. She felt it was necessary to take action and stand with the people of Palmlow during this difficult time,” Tarley noted.
Senator Thomas Yaya Nimely, through his Home Coordinator Alex Shar, also contributed 20 bundles of zinc. Shar urged the local leadership of Palmlow to distribute the materials fairly and ensure that the most affected families benefit.
“This is not just a donation—it is a message of unity and responsibility. Senator Nimely remains committed to working with the people of Grand Gedeh to ensure that they receive the support they need in times of crisis,”Shar stated
The residents of Palmlow were overwhelmed with gratitude, praising both lawmakers for their timely intervention. Speaking on behalf of the community, several residents described Representative Johnson and Senator Nimely as “caring and committed leaders” who consistently advocate for their constituents’ welfare.
“Rep. Johnson has always shown that she stands with the people of Putu, and today’s gesture proves it once again,” one community elder remarked.
The donation marks a significant step in the recovery efforts for residents of Palmlow, many of whom are still rebuilding their lives and homes months after the natural disaster. Community leaders say more support is still needed but welcomed the lawmakers’ action as a critical morale boost for the affected families.
As reconstruction continues, the citizens of Palmlow are calling on other national and international partners to emulate the lawmakers’ example and help restore dignity to the lives disrupted by the storm.
