The spokesperson of the Assembly of the National Imams Council of Liberia, Imam Sheikh Ali Krayee, has called for the immediate dissolution of the country’s legislature, labeling it a “national tragedy and liability.”
The council, which represents all Muslims across Liberia, also argued that the persistent issues affecting the country’s legislative body have remained unresolved for a decade, and that only a complete overhaul can restore public trust and effective governance.
Imam Krayee’s call for dissolution comes amid growing frustration among the Liberian populace, who have on countless occasions expressed disillusionment with their elected Representatives and Senators.
Some of them have constantly voiced their concerns on social media regarding their legislators ‘refusal to put Liberia and the citizenry’s interests above their own interests while performing their legislative duties.
However, the council head’s assertion further highlights several critical issues that have persisted within the legislature, including stalled legislation on critical matters such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure development, among others.
Addressing a news conference yesterday, May 19, 2025, in Monrovia, Imam Krayee further cited a series of grievances against the legislature, including rampant corruption, inefficiency, and a lack of accountability as key factors contributing to the deterioration of public confidence.
According to him, the long-standing issues within the legislative branch have persisted for decades without resolution, disclosing that no significant reform could occur unless the current legislative body is entirely dissolved and replaced.
“This National Legislature has become a national tragedy. The body is a national liability, and those issues that have existed at the Legislature for a decade cannot be resolved until the Legislature is dissolved.
“We will support a citizen movement to dissolve the Legislature and replace it with something more relevant, more economical, and more effective in fostering democratic participation,” he emphasized.
Imam Krayee further indicated that the entire governance system needs a total overhaul, and asserted, “Years back, I said that the Legislature was the most useless branch of government amongst the three branches of government.”
“And since the second half of the last century, what we call the Legislature has largely become a national liability. Why would an impoverished nation spend millions annually on a group of people whose jobs could be perfectly done by a blind and crippled couple sitting somewhere at the Presidency?”, he wondered.
He further criticized the overall governance system, labeling it outdated and ineffective, thereby reiterating his sentiment he expressed years ago, calling the Legislature ‘the most useless branch of government.’
The Imam further revealed that the legislature has failed Liberians miserably and that the need for its dissolution cannot be overstated, and said, “For too long, it has been a breeding ground for nepotism and self-interest, rather than a platform for the voices of the citizens.”
Imam Krayee, however, urged Liberians to stand in unison to pressure the government for a better future, and added, “Together, we can demand accountability and ensure that our government serves the people, not itself.”
