Grand Gedeh Legislative Caucus Calls For Impartial, Swift Investigation Into Arrest Of Rep. Debe

Members of the Grand Gedeh Legislative Caucus are calling on the Government of Liberia to ensure a fair, impartial, and swift investigation into the circumstances surrounding the arrest of Representative Jacob Debee.
The joint statement, issued Monday, was signed by Senator Thomas Yaya Nimely (Chairman), Representative Marie G. Johnson (Co-Chair), Senator Zoe Pennue (Advisor), and Representative Jeremiah G. Sokan (Member).
The Caucus expressed a deep concern over the recent arrest of Rep. Debee, who represents Electoral District #3 in Grand Gedeh County.
In the statement, the lawmakers emphasized the need to uphold justice, due process, and the rule of law, while cautioning against any form of political interference in the ongoing legal proceedings.
“Given the gravity of this situation and its potential implications, we urge the Government of Liberia to ensure a fair, transparent, and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding his arrest. The principles of justice and due process must always be upheld at the highest level,” the lawmakers stated.
They also urged the government to act swiftly, warning that any prolonged delay or silence could lead to speculation and public unrest.
“We appeal to the government to expedite the investigation process to prevent unnecessary delays that could fuel speculation and uncertainty. The Liberian people deserve clarity and accountability,” the statement continued.
Reaffirming their commitment to democratic values and the rule of law, the Caucus called on the residents of Grand Gedeh both at home and abroad to remain calm and patient as the legal process unfolds.
“As this matter progresses, we urge all stakeholders to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its course. We call on all Grand Gedeans, both in the county, in Monrovia, and in the diaspora, to stay peaceful while the relevant authorities conduct their investigation with professionalism and integrity,” the statement concluded.
Rep. Debee and three others including former Speaker Fonati Koffa were detained on Saturday afternoon at the Monrovia Central Prison following formal charges by the Liberia National Police. The charges include arson, criminal facilitation, solicitation, attempted murder, and criminal conspiracy.
The arrests stem from a months-long investigation that alleges that members of the Rule of Law Caucus orchestrated what police have described as a politically motivated attack intended to disrupt the operations of the Legislature.
The fire, which occurred on December 18, caused an estimated $8.6 million in damage and temporarily shut down legislative activities. According to a police report released Friday, the attack was coordinated through an aide acting on instructions “from the chief,” reportedly referring to a senior government official.
