Gov’t Revokes BIO-CHICO’s Operating Permit

The Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah has announced that President Boakai has immediately revoked the operating permit of Bio-Chico Resources Liberia Limited, a mining company operating in Gbarpolu County.
The announcement was made during a press briefing at the Ministry of Information, Cultural Affairs, and Tourism (MICAT), Minister Piah emphasized the decision was reached following an inter-ministerial meeting that included representatives from the Ministries of Justice, Public Works, Mines & Energy, Transport, State, and Information.
Bio-Chico Resources Liberia Limited, a company incorporated under the laws of Hong Kong, had been licensed to explore, produce, and export iron ore in Gbarpolu County.
The revocation comes in response to persistent complaints from residents in Montserrado’s District 17, as well as in Bomi and Gbarpolu Counties.
Community members have accused the company of operating heavy-duty iron ore trucks that have damaged public roads, contributed to traffic accidents, and caused significant environmental and safety concerns.
Piah stated serious public concerns over the company’s adverse impact on infrastructure, environmental health, and community safety, “Effective immediately, the operating permit of Bio Chico Resources Liberia Limited has been revoked,”
Minister Piah emphasized that President Boakai’s administration is firmly committed to a “people-first” governance philosophy.
He stressed that no entityforeign or domesticwill be allowed to operate in ways that undermine the rights, safety, and dignity of the Liberian people.
“This government has listened. President Boakai remains steadfast in advancing a governance agenda centered on accountability, environmental protection, and public welfare,” he said.
Piah also expressed appreciation to the communities that raised their concerns, highlighting the vital role of civic engagement in upholding democratic principles.
The revocation of Bio Chico’s permit marks one of the first major enforcement actions under President Boakai’s leadership, signaling a renewed focus on regulatory accountability and responsible corporate conduct within Liberia.
