The Senior Women’s National Football team of Liberia have been celebrated by the government for successfully participating in the 2025 West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone ‘A’ Women’s Cup in Nouakchott, Mauritania.
The team received peloria of acknowledgements from government officials and concern citizens for competing among her neighboring rivals and ending as the third best team from this year’s tournament.
The 2025 WAFU journey for Lone Star ladies ended in smiles and motivation from different stakeholders and government actors early Tuesday Morning at the Roberts International Airport in Margibi County during the team arrival ceremony.
The players were greeted on arrival by the sounds of traditional drums and other instruments played by Liberia’s National Culture Troop.
Deputy Minister for Sports Andy Quamie and the authorities of Liberia Football Association including it president Moustapha Raji, Cultural Ambassador Kekurah Kamara and others were right positioned at the airport to receive the delegation of players and technical staffers.
Greeting the team, Deputy Sports Minister Quamie appreciated members of the delegation for ably representing the Lone Star and ending in a recognizable spot after the entire process.
He acknowledged the players effort to have secured a third place among eight countries while celebrating Coach Salem Kebede and the technical officials for guiding the maidens to a good run tournament.
The minister however encouraged the players to take their performance in the just ended tournament as worthy one that no amount of criticism from social media and other platforms should condemn.
“You see that flag on your chest, not many people have the opportunity to wear it but you had an opportunity to fly country flag among the thousand of women in football across Liberia and you made us proud. Third place is a place in a competition of such. There were eight countries and your performance among them was excellent,” he noted.
“Thank you for representing our country and working hard to avoid being the least. This is to motivate you to keep doing your best and we know that in the not-too-distant future, you are going to have a good performance in other CAF competition,” Minister Quamie said.
The head of the football house Moustapha Raji paid a special tribute to the Senior national women team head coach for leaving her comfort zone in Ethiopia and coming to Liberia with a vision approved by the FA to build a solid foundation from grassroot to senior level women football.
While celebrating Liberian girls for ending this year WAFU with a third-place medal, LFA president called on the public and concern stakeholders to exercise more patience in regard to setting greater expectations from the players and the team in general.
“We want to ask all citizens of the country to be patient, this is a young team that we are try to build and there is light at the end of the thunder for us. With the young kids we have today, in the next few years we are confident that they will start to bring different Cups and not only third place,” he averred.
Raji again reminded national government that football development requires more in order to enjoy and celebrate better achievement.
He called on the chief patron of sports to and his administration to take interest in spreading its financial support to women football as a way promoting gender inclusivity.
