Gompa, Down Town, D. 17 Academy Joins Second Division For 2024/2025 Season

In a thrilling conclusion to the 2024 Liberia national third division promotional playoff, three clubs have successfully secured promotion to the second-tier league for the upcoming 2024/2025 season. Down Town Football Club from central Monrovia, Gompa Football Club of Nimba County, and District 17 Academy will join the ranks of 16 teams in the Liberia Football Association (LFA) Second Division.
The playoff, held in Nimba County, showcased intense competition as the newly promoted teams fought hard for their spots. In the semifinals on September 24, Down Town FC and Gompa FC emerged victorious against District 17 Academy and Amazing FC, respectively. Down Town FC’s solid performance secured a spot in the finals, while Gompa FC displayed resilience, ultimately earning them a place in the second division.
The grand finale saw Gompa FC crowned champions of the 2024 national third division playoff, narrowly defeating Down Town FC 1-0. This victory not only signifies their rise but also adds prestige to Nimba County’s representation in the national league, where they will join fellow county teams Nimba Kwado and Mighty Enforcer. Gompa FC’s win reflects their hard work and dedication throughout the season, and they will aim to make a significant impact in the upcoming league.
In the third-place match, District 17 Academy faced off against Amazing FC in a bid for the final promotional slot. After a tense first half that ended goalless, the match took a dramatic turn in the second half. District 17 Academy’s Prince Varflay and James Kanneh scored two late goals, clinching a 2-0 victory and securing their spot in the second division for the first time since their establishment in 2022. Their achievement is a testament to the team’s growth and determination in a short period.
As the new season approaches, the three newly promoted clubs—Gompa FC, Down Town FC, and District 17 Academy—will replace Nimba FC, Nimba United, and Life FC, which were relegated due to their bottom-place finishes last season. This shift promises to invigorate the competition in the LFA Second Division, as these newcomers look to establish themselves against more experienced teams.
Fans eagerly await the start of the season, which is sure to bring excitement and unpredictability as these clubs aim for success in their new league. The promotion of these teams not only enriches the competitive landscape but also highlights the growing talent in Liberian football, setting the stage for a dynamic 2024/2025 season.
