The Independent Catholic Church of Liberia (ICCL) has clarified that it is Catholic but not Roman Catholic Church stressing that it has not purported or impersonated as a Roman Catholic Church.
The ICCL says that it has not even made any statement whether in Liberia or out of the country on behalf of the Roman Catholic Church or as a Roman Catholic Church.
The ICCL statement is in response to a statement that was released on Friday, October 18, 2019 by the Catholic Bishops Conference of Liberia (CABICOL) in which it insinuated that the ICCL was portraying itself as a Roman Catholic Church.
According to the ICCL, the word “Catholic” means universal which implies inclusiveness saying that the doors of the church are opened to all which is the difference between the two institutions, the ICCL statement indicated.
“The ICCL respects the Roman Catholic Church and does not consider it as an enemy or rivalry church because we all belong to the Kingdom of Christ but on the contrary, if it considers ICCL as such, and wants to exclude it, would be too unfortunate,” the ICCL stressed.
The ICCL statement further stated that the ICCL is an Independent, autonomous- African-centered church, Catholic expression of the Christian Faith adding that for too long African Catholics have allowed what it called “Eurocentric institutions” to define them or determine their identities.
“The ICCL does not allow people in Europe to regulate the church’s activities because the members know who we are,” the church pointed out. See Full Text On Pages 8 & 9
