The Liberia National Police (LNP) has called for peace and adherence to legal procedures following reports of a planned protest by motorcyclists in Monrovia under the banner of the Supreme Motorcycle Transport Union of Liberia (SUMTUL) Inc.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the LNP reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the constitutional rights of citizens to peaceful assembly, as guaranteed under Article 17 of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia.
However, the police stressed that any public demonstration must comply with the legal framework governing protests to ensure order and public safety.
The LNP urged all motorcyclists intending to participate in the protest to formally notify the Ministry of Justice, the statutory body responsible for national peace and security.
This, the statement noted, would allow the authorities to make proper arrangements to facilitate a peaceful and orderly demonstration.
“The LNP assures motorcyclists that once the necessary arrangements are made and approved, the police will fulfill its constitutional duty of ensuring security and safety for both the protesters and the general public,” the statement read.
At the same time, the police has issued a strong warning against any acts of violence, confrontation, or activities that could disrupt public order.
The LNP assured residents and business owners in Monrovia that they could go about their daily activities without fear, as law enforcement actors remain actively engaged with all relevant stakeholders.
The planned protest comes in the wake of demonstrations by the Youth League of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) and the ongoing concerns among motorcyclists regarding transportation policies and regulations.
As tensions rise, the police are emphasizing dialogue and legal compliance to prevent disorder. With the LNP on high alert, the focus remains on maintaining stability while ensuring that all parties exercise their rights within the confines of the law.
