One of the senatorial candidates in the forthcoming by-election in Nimba, Garrison Yealue, has frowned on President Joseph Boakai for the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia .
Speaking to Radio Kergheamahn in the commercial hub of Gompa, Candidate Yealue disclosed that the establishment of a war crimes court undermines the ongoing peace process and developments of the country .
According to Yealue, about seventy-five percent of residents in Nimba fought the war in defense of their county. That means entire residents in the county will be appearing in court for prosecution .
“These are some of the reasons for which I joined the race to contest for the senatorial seat; war crimes court issue, AML operations pertaining to US$1.5 million given to Nimba,” Yealue stated.
“The Liberia war ended in 2003 and the country has carried out three transitions of government peacefully, why establish a war crimes court to open new wounds by bringing old history to create hard feelings among the residents,” Yeanue intimated.
Candidate Yeanue further boasted that if elected, ArcelorMittal contractual agreement or MDA will be reviewed to make sure that US$1.5 million given to Nimba be increased to US$4 million, which t will be distributed among the communities affected by AML operations in the county .
Since the beginning of April 2025, the senatorial by-election campaign messages have been loudly echoed in Gompa and other districts .
In a related development, the lone female candidate in the senatorial by-election, Madam Edith Gongloe-Weh, spoke radio to Voice of Gompa stating that she joined the race to bring gender balance among the lawmakers in Nimba .
” If the county elects me as senator, I will focus on girls education, women empowerment, education, health,” Madam Gongloe-Weh said .
As for Representative Samuel Kogar, one of the candidates vying for the senatorial seat in Nimba, noted “Senator Johnson death is a political setback for the county , Nimba is not ready yet to elect a woman as senator, therefore, let Edith Gongloe-Weh leave the by-election with us the men.”
