Recently at the Liberia School of Wushu in Paynesville City, Stakeholders of Liberia Taekwondo Federation (LTF) unanimously adopted a new constitution during an ordinary congress. The decision, marked by a vote of approval from the delegates, was hailed as a historic milestone in the sport’s development and governance in the country.
The newly adopted constitution, many believe, aligns with the principles of the federation’s parent body, providing a clear path for more efficient and transparent operations. The updated framework is expected to address past challenges within the sport, paving the way for a more cohesive and productive federation.
Master Junior Pewee Russian, President of the Liberia Taekwondo Federation, addressed the gathering, underscoring the importance of unity and collective effort in advancing the sport. He encouraged the delegates to prioritize the greater good of Taekwondo over personal interests, acknowledging that past divisions within the federation had hindered progress.
“We have struggled for far too long,” Master Russian stated. “The crisis within Taekwondo has been a significant barrier to our growth. Whether it’s the accusation of mismanagement of resources we don’t even have, or the lack of support from the government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports, we must recognize that these challenges are not insurmountable. However, we cannot overcome them if we continue to harbor personal animosities and fail to unite for the greater good of the sport.”
Master Russian also emphasized the need for mutual respect among all members of the Taekwondo community exemplifying that a kingdom with too many kings will never flourish and everyone in an institution cannot lead at the same time.
Addressing the past struggles within the federation, Master Russian reminded delegates that the challenges facing Taekwondo in Liberia are not unique to their association but rather reflect a broader issue within martial arts communities. “Taekwondo teaches discipline, and we must exemplify that in our interactions. We must move beyond the spirit of division and confusion that has held us back,” he urged.
The martial art leader expressed gratitude to the delegates for their unwavering support, acknowledging that his achievements thus far would not have been possible without their cooperation. “As your President, I am committed to ensuring that together we can turn a new page for Taekwondo. Our journey towards a unified and prosperous future begins now,” he said.
Master Russian also reaffirmed his dedication to the development of Taekwondo in Liberia, despite the challenges that lie ahead. With the support of the Masters Council, he vowed to continue his leadership efforts to promote the sport at every level.
Former Defense Minister J. Brownie Samukai, who also attended the event, praised Master Russian for his tireless work as both an athlete and an administrator. “I am truly impressed with the progress made under Master Russian’s leadership,” he said, urging other members of the federation to rally behind the President in ensuring the continued growth and success of Taekwondo in Liberia.
