The Rural Human Rights Activists Program (RHRAP) has expressed deep concern over the recent fire incident at the Capitol Building, describing the incident as alarming and calling for a prompt and thorough investigation.
RHRAP urged President Joseph Boakai and the Executive Branch to collaborate with security agencies and citizens to investigate the fire incident and share the findings with the public promptly.
“Considering the current hullabaloo at the Capitol Building, one could easily link the fire incident to the situation,” the statement read. “If the fire was deliberate, the government must bring the perpetrators to justice.”
The fire, which occurred on December 18, 2024, destroyed the William R. Tolbert Joint Chamber used by the Legislature.
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the blaze. President Boakai condemned the incident as a serious threat to Liberia’s democracy and vowed that those responsible would be held accountable.
RHRAP criticized elements within the 55th Legislature, accusing them of undermining democratic values and hindering the country’s development agenda.
The organization called on civil society organizations (CSOs) to inform constituents about the happenings at the Legislature, aiming to bridge gaps between urban and rural communities and enhance the electorate’s ability to choose competent lawmakers.
“CSOs need to breach the series of gaps that exist between the urban and rural communities concerning the governance of the country,” RHRAP stated.
“This will enhance the ability of the electorates to elect competent lawmakers that will serve in the interest of the people.”
The organization also expressed hope that the fire would not impede documentation necessary for auditing the Legislature.
The Liberia National Police have initiated an investigation into the fire.
Four individuals, including Speaker Fonati Koffa and Representative Frank Saah Foko, have been questioned.
The incident has drawn widespread condemnation and calls for accountability, with diplomatic missions urging calm and a thorough investigation to prevent further escalation of tensions.
As the investigation continues, RHRAP and other civil society actors remain vigilant, advocating for transparency and justice to uphold Liberia’s democratic principles.
