Police Intervenes In Claim Of Armed Officers At CDC Rally

By Precious D. Freeman
The Liberia National Police (LNP) has issued a public statement addressing concerns raised over the presence of armed police officers at a recent rally hosted by the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) along the Tubman Boulevard in Congo Town.
Members of the public and observers noted that several LNP officers appeared to be carrying out VIP protection duties—a function that legally falls under the exclusive mandate of the Executive Protection Service (EPS).
The EPS is tasked with providing security for sitting and former high-ranking officials, including Presidents and government dignitaries.
In response, the LNP reaffirmed its commitment to professionalism and clarified the roles of its officers.
According to the statement, LNP officers assigned to former Presidents and high-profile officials are expected to focus on responsibilities such as crowd control, traffic management, and maintaining general public order during events not VIP protection.
“We extend our sincere apologies to the leadership of the Congress for Democratic Change for any misunderstanding or inconvenience this incident may have caused,” the LNP stated.
“Our primary objective remains to support the efforts of the Executive Protection Service and ensure the safety and security of all public gatherings in accordance with the law.”
The police also acknowledged the seriousness of the matter and pledged to take corrective measures to ensure that all officers adhere strictly to their designated roles in future assignments.
The incident has sparked renewed discussions around the coordination between security agencies during political events and the importance of clearly defined mandates to avoid operational overlap or public confusion.
