Finance and Development Planing Minister, Augustine Ngafuan has applauded the appointment of former Finance Minister Boima Kamara as the new Director General of the West African Monetary Agency (WAMA).
In his congratulatory message on behalf of the President and the citizenry, over the weekend, Minister Ngafuan also described the former Minister as a “pride”for Liberia.
Ngafuan at the same time emphasized Kamara as one of Liberia’s ‘finest sons,’ citing their shared history in education, the Central Bank of Liberia, and the Ministry of Finance.
He further expressed confidence that Kamara’s leadership will yield positive results over the next four years at the regional body.
He also pledged Liberia’s full support for Kamara’s tenure and viewed the courtesy visit as a strong symbol of positive transition and collaboration, underscoring the potential for current and former leaders to work together in advancing the nation’s goals.
WAMA new DG, leading his delegation thanked President Joseph Boakai and former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for their support, noting that his service in various leadership roles in Liberia paved the way for his appointment.
DG Kamara at the same time, expressed that being the first Liberian to head WAMA is not only an honour for him but for Liberia as a whole.
He also acknowledged the President and thanked Minister Ngafuan, the CBL and citizenry for the tremendous support he receives in making his bid successful for the position of DG WAMA.
As part of his vision for the future, Kamara emphasized the need for West African countries to adopt innovative solutions in addressing regional challenges, and asserted, “West African problems should be solved by West Africans.”
He called for thinking “outside the box”, coupled with the region tackling issues such as fiscal constraints and the instability of energy supplies, which contribute to high inflation in many parts of West Africa.
Kamara also noted that the conditions driving inflation are more structural than monetary, urging for a comprehensive approach to tackling these persistent challenges.
He acknowledged the significant responsibility of achieving macroeconomic convergence in the region and outlined WAMA’s ambitious goals to work closely with CBL and Ministries of Finance across the 15 ECOWAS member states.
Meanwhile, the WAMA delegation, which included the outgoing DG, Momodou Bamba Saho further pledged to represent the country with integrity on the regional stage.
