MYS Conducts Facility Assessment In Bassa Ahead Next County Meet

As Liberia gears up for the much-anticipated 2025-2026 National County Sports Meet, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MYS) over the weekend began a nationwide assessment tour, starting with a comprehensive inspection of key sports and hospitality facilities in Grand Bassa County.
Leading the delegation was Assistant Minister for Sports, Murvee Gray, who toured major venues in Buchanan, including the historic Doris Williams Sports Stadium and the St. Peter Catholic Field. The visit was aimed at evaluating the county’s readiness to potentially host the country’s flagship inter-county sporting event.
The Ministry’s assessment accordingly focused on the physical condition of the playing fields, spectator seating, dressing rooms, sanitation systems, and surrounding amenities. The delegation also reviewed accommodation options such as local hotels, motels, and lodges to determine their capacity to host athletes, officials, and fans.
Before the inspection began, Assistant Minister Gray made a symbolic donation of two footballs each to eight local football academies participating in the Under-12 youth league. The gesture was well-received and highlighted the Ministry’s continued commitment to youth engagement and sports development at the grassroots level.
While the official host county for the 2025-2026 edition of the Sports Meet has not yet been announced, Grand Bassa is seen as a strong contender. The county enjoys a rich sports history, having won the football championship titles in 1990, 2014, and 2016, along with the recent kickball championship during the 2024-2025 season. The passionate fanbase, strong youth programs, and strategic location make Grand Bassa an ideal host candidate.
Local residents and sports stakeholders welcomed the Ministry’s visit with great enthusiasm. Many expressed hope that the assessment would lead to meaningful upgrades and ultimately position Grand Bassa as the host county.
“We are proud of our sporting legacy and are excited to be considered. With the right support and infrastructure, Grand Bassa is ready to shine,” said one local sports coordinator.
Assistant Minister Gray also held discussions with county officials, facility managers, and local sports coordinators to identify urgent needs, establish realistic timelines for improvements, and discuss strategies for promoting youth participation in sports.
The National County Sports Meet is Liberia’s most prestigious sporting event, drawing thousands of spectators from across the country. The Ministry’s ongoing assessments across all 15 counties aim to ensure a smooth and inclusive tournament later this year.
