MPW Issues Compensation Forms For Road Resettlement

As part of the ongoing Resettlement Action Plan and Environmental and Social Impact initiatives, the Ministry of Public Works (MPW) has begun distributing consent forms for resettlement benefits to property owners affected by the paving of the Buchanan-Rivercess Road.
The forms, which outline the financial compensation allocated by the Government of Liberia through the African Development Bank, were handed out on Monday at the Flour Mill Community in Buchanan. Officials say this marks a crucial step in the compensation process, ensuring transparency and accountability for those whose properties will be impacted by the project.
Amando Garmondeh Paye, Director for Resettlement, Environmental, and Social Safeguard at the Ministry of Public Works, explained that the consent forms serve to formally inform affected property owners of their compensation entitlements. He stressed that before receiving the form, individuals have the opportunity to decide whether they wish to relocate.
“Relocation is voluntary, and affected property owners must confirm their decision before signing the consent form,” Paye stated. He further clarified that signing the document signifies acceptance of the compensation and agreement to vacate the property before construction begins.
To address any concerns from the affected individuals, the Ministry has established a Grievance Committee, ensuring that all claims and disputes are handled fairly. “Our goal is to maintain transparency throughout this process,” Paye reiterated.
According to Paye, the resettlement process is nearing completion, with the Rivercess section already finalized. He also disclosed that in Buchanan, the Ministry has expanded the road project to include the On Your Own Loop road for paving.
Following the distribution of the consent forms, the Ministry will return to disburse the corresponding compensation to the affected individuals.
The event this week saw a gathering of local residents eager to receive their compensation forms. Many expressed optimism about the initiative, commending the government and the African Development Bank for their efforts.
As the road project progresses, officials continue to encourage affected property owners to engage with the Ministry for any clarifications regarding their compensation and relocation process.
