After wrapping up a successful debut season, Lone Star Cell MTN has officially launched the second season of the Momo Community League — a grassroots football initiative aimed at uncovering hidden talents within local communities and giving them a platform to shine.
The program, which is a vital part of the Liberia Football Association’s grassroots development agenda, continues to receive full sponsorship and logistical support from the mobile telecommunications company.
Over the weekend, stakeholders including community team administrators, officials from the Liberia Football Association (LFA), and representatives from Lone Star Cell MTN gathered at the LFA headquarters to officially unveil the new season.
The launch event signaled a renewed commitment to nurturing untapped football potential in Liberia’s communities while also empowering the areas through economic and social engagement.
Speaking at the event, Lone Star Cell MTN’s Brand and Communications Manager, Abigail Nufeatalai, highlighted the overwhelming success of the league’s first edition.
She expressed pride in the impact it had on young athletes who were given the chance to transition from obscurity into national recognition.
Nufeatalai emphasized that the tournament is not merely about playing football but also about building a future generation of Liberian football stars who can eventually represent the country at national and international levels.
“Last year, our success story was not just about the league, but the fact that we saw players leave the league and get elevated to bigger leagues. That’s exactly what we envisioned when we told the Football Association, we wanted to support grassroots football,” she said. “We knew our impact would be meaningful only if players from the Momo Community League moved up to higher levels — that way we are building the next generation of national team players.”
She further revealed that for season two, Lone Star Cell is expanding its efforts beyond the pitch. Plans are underway to integrate local communities into the economic benefits of the league through the establishment of mobile money agent programs, merchant opportunities, and the distribution of promotional materials on match days.
This, according to her, will create sustainable income avenues for community residents during and after the tournament.
Nufeatalai extended gratitude to the Liberia Football Association and all stakeholders who played pivotal roles in the successful execution of season one, urging them to maintain the same level of commitment in advancing football in Liberia.
Representing the Liberia Football Association, Saye-Taayor Adolphus Dolo, the LFA’s Second Vice President, praised Lone Star Cell MTN for its consistent support and vision.
He stated that the LFA welcomes partnerships from other companies who may wish to replicate such initiatives, noting that collaborative efforts are key to driving football development in the country.
Season two of the Momo Community League is set to officially kick off on April 19, 2025, with an opening match at the Barnersville field.
The competition will feature 16 teams drawn from nearly 20 communities — some of which have merged to form competitive squads. All participating teams will receive full sponsorship from MTN, including logistics and training support.
Each of the 16 teams will be awarded L$72,000 as preparation funds. The top three teams will receive cash prizes of L$300,000 for first place, L$200,000 for second, and L$100,000 for third.
In addition to financial rewards, each team has been supplied with five footballs, two sets of jerseys, and several warm-up t-shirts to aid their preparation and participation in the tournament.
The Momo Community League continues to emerge as one of the most promising platforms for grassroots football development in Liberia, providing young players not just with an opportunity to compete, but a real shot at changing their lives through sport.
