Liberia Agriculture Minister J. Alexander Neuteh has concluded a comprehensive inspection tour at the Central Agriculture Research Institute (CARI) in Suakoko District 5, Bong County.

Minister Nuetah said the visit was intended to evaluate ongoing research initiatives, particularly in cassava cultivation, as the country strives to enhance its agricultural productivity.

The Minister’s tour at the facility focused on the cassava modification field, where CARI has introduced seven distinct varieties of cassava sourced from the International Institute of Cooperation in Agriculture (IICA) in Nigeria.

The Agriculture Minister emphasized the importance of these varieties, which have been multiplied and tested to ensure they meet the needs of local farmers and the economy.

He highlighted the necessity of providing farmers with high-starch cassava to ensure successful production and profitability.

The Minister, however, expressed concern over the impact of drought on cassava crops ahead of the upcoming rainy season, adding that farmers who planted late are facing challenges, as we have observed across the country.

Minister Neuteh praised CARI’s efforts in providing quality planting materials and sought clarity on the timeline for distributing cassava cuttings to farmers. Researchers assured him that harvesting would commence between July and August, with the initial cuttings designated as foundational stock for further multiplication.

He further highlighted a strategic shift in cassava production, stating, “We aim to enhance income generation for smallholder farmers.” He proposed consolidating farming efforts into larger units and moving away from individual plots to optimize land use and increase productivity.

The Agriculture Minister emphasized the establishment of cassava processing centers, assuring farmers that the government is committed to this initiative.

“We are currently working on land preparation for a processing plant in Bong County. We anticipate the arrival of equipment and the establishment of the facility by June,” Nuetah stressed.

As chairman of CARI’s Board, Minister Neuteh reaffirmed the board’s commitment to supporting the institute and enhancing agricultural research in Liberia.

“It is essential for Liberians to lead agricultural development,” he asserted.

For his part, the Director of CARI, Arthur Bob Karnuah, has emphasized the critical role of quality seeds in successful agricultural production and highlighted CARI’s partnerships with international organizations to produce viable seeds.

With currently 13.1 hectares dedicated as a demonstration site, CARI showcases seven cassava varieties, including drought-resistant options and those optimized for high yield and nutritional value.

These efforts aim to bolster Liberia’s agricultural sustainability and food security.

As the country navigates its agricultural challenges, the collaboration between government, research institutions, and farmers remains pivotal in enhancing Liberia’s agricultural landscape.
