Francis Koiyan, 43, has been forwarded to the Monrovia City Court for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Hannah Karto, over an empty palm wine container in Zeors Town, Margibi County.
According to police reports, the incident occurred after Karto allegedly refused to return the palm wine container to Koiyan.
The investigation revealed that Karto had gone into the bush to buy palm wine when the defendant, reportedly angered by her refusal to hand over the container, pursued her.
Upon locating Karto, Koiyan allegedly attacked her, striking her repeatedly until she collapsed. Authorities say he then tied her hands behind her back with a lapper, placed her head inside her underpants, and abandoned her in an unconscious state. Karto later succumbed to her injuries.
Following the incident, Koiyan was arrested and charged with Murder and Aggravated Assault.
He has been forwarded to court and is expected to be held at the Monrovia Central Prison while awaiting trial.
Local authorities have condemned the act, describing it as a senseless and brutal killing.
“We are committed to ensuring justice is served. Such acts of violence have no place in our communities,” said a spokesperson for the Margibi County Police Department.
Residents of Zeors Town have expressed shock and outrage over the tragic incident.
Many have called for stricter measures to address domestic violence and ensure the safety of women. Community leaders have urged law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate the case and ensure a fair trial.
Legal experts suggest that if convicted, Koiyan could face a lengthy prison sentence, given the severity of the charges against him.
The case is expected to draw significant public interest as it proceeds through the court system.
Meanwhile, advocacy groups are using the incident to highlight the growing issue of gender-based violence in Liberia.
“This is yet another tragic reminder that we must do more to protect women from violence and hold perpetrators accountable,” said a representative from a local women’s rights organization.
As the legal proceedings unfold, the public remains hopeful that justice will be served for Hannah Karto and her grieving family.
