As the nation anticipates a landmark decision from the Supreme Court regarding the legal dispute between embattled Speaker Fonati Koffa and Richard Koon’s leadership alongside members of the House of Representatives, the Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) has issued a strongly worded statement urging calm, maturity, and respect for the rule of law.
In an official address delivered by its National president, Bornor M. Varmah, the LNBA called on all parties particularly lawmakers, political supporters, and the general public to refrain from inflammatory rhetoric, threats, or actions that could compromise peace and stability.
“The Judiciary must be given the space to render its judgment free of pressure, intimidation, or undue influence from any quarter,” Cllr. Varmah stated.
He emphasized that respect for the courts and legal processes is essential to safeguarding Liberia’s democratic order.
The Bar Association reminded Liberians that while it is within citizens’ rights to critique or analyze court rulings, all reactions must remain lawful and peaceful.
Any form of violence or public disorder in response to the Court’s decision, the LNBA warned, will be unacceptable and contrary to the values of a democratic society.
Amid circulating allegations of executive interference in the pending Supreme Court ruling, the LNBA firmly cautioned against drawing premature conclusions or spreading unverified claims that could erode public confidence in the judicial system.
“The Constitution of Liberia guarantees the independence of the Judiciary,” the statement read. “The Supreme Court must be allowed to discharge its constitutional mandate without fear or favor.”
The LNBA pledged continued vigilance, stating it will not hesitate to act decisively if credible evidence arises pointing to any unconstitutional actions or interference by any branch of government.
Reaffirming its role as a guardian of constitutional governance, the Association underscored its dedication to defending judicial independence and preserving Liberia’s hard-won peace.
“Let us all act in a manner that honors our Constitution, strengthens our institutions, and promotes national unity,” Cllr. Varmah concluded.
The LNBA’s statement comes at a pivotal moment, with political tensions running high amid legal uncertainties surrounding House’s leadership and legislative procedure.
