The Liberia Airport Authority (LAA), in partnership with the Liberia Land Authority (LLA), has taken a significant step to ensure the protection of the Roberts International Airport (RIA) facility from encroachment.
This strategic move is aimed at safeguarding the airport’s land and ensuring that the airport operates without disruption from unauthorized activities.
However, the partnership comes following recent power outage at the airport, and left travelers stranded, thus causing significant delays in flight landing at the country’s only international and major airport.
The incident also raised concerns about the airport’s infrastructure and the potential risks posed by unauthorized developments in the vicinity, after the management said the outage occurred at a result of bird strike that affected the electrical line.
But in light of these challenges, the LAA and LLA have committed to a comprehensive assessment of the airport’s surrounding areas to identify and mitigate encroachment any future threats.
As part of their initiative, the two authorities conducted a thorough survey of the airport’s perimeter to identify any existing encroachments and assess potential risks during a touring of the entire facility.
During the fact-finding tour yesterday, April 23, 2025, at the R.I.A, both authorities assessed the current state of the airport’s land and discussed strategic measures to prevent encroachment and ensure sustainable management of the area.
The tour also included the inspections of critical areas adjacent to the airport, where unauthorized developments have increasingly posed risks.
“It is imperative that we protect the space around us from encroachment. This joint assessment allows us to take a coordinated approach to mitigate potential encroachments”, Jero Mends-Cole stated.
Also speaking, LLA Chairman, Samuel F. Kpakio lauded the entire team and reaffirmed the LLA’s commitment to promoting sustainable land management practices.
Meanwhile, the assessment tour included LAA Board Chair, Massaquoi K. Kamara; LAA Deputy Managing Director for Operations, Mark E. Kuiah; RIA Port Manager, James F. Mulbah; LLA Assistant Director, Milton N. Brown; LLA Public Relations Director, Kweshie Tetteh, among others.
Meanwhile, as the LAA and LLA move forward with their plans, they further commit to transparency and community engagement, recognizing that the success of their efforts will depend on the support and cooperation of the public.
