The Government of Liberia has embarked on the construction of a modern judicial complex in Harper City, a historic initiative marking the first self-funded project of its kind by the Liberian government in Maryland County.
Nelson B. Chineh, Circuit Judge of the 4th Judicial Circuit in Maryland County, spoke to MGTV Liberia LIVE about the significance of the project.
Judge Chineh described the initiative as a major step forward in strengthening the judiciary’s independence and operational capacity in the county.
“For many years, the judiciary in Maryland County has operated out of the Administration Building and City Hall. This new complex will provide the judiciary with its facility for full operation,” Judge Chineh said during the interview.
The official groundbreaking ceremony is set for January 20, 2025, with Sie-A-Nyene Gyapay Yuoh, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court presiding over the event.
The complex, when completed, will house key judicial offices and units, including the Debt Court, Circuit Court, Magistrate Court, and a specialized Social Gender-Based Violence unit. The complex will include residential quarters for the circuit judge and their family.
Judge Chineh emphasized the importance of the project to the residents of Maryland County, urging them to view it as a shared achievement.
“This project belongs to the people of Maryland County. It will enhance access to justice and create an environment conducive for the judiciary to operate effectively,” he stated.
The judge highlighted the longstanding need for a dedicated judicial facility in the region, which has often struggled with inadequate infrastructure to support the justice system.
The construction is being handled by a private firm, though Judge Chineh did not disclose the company’s name.
He assured the public that the firm is committed to delivering a quality facility that meets the needs of the Judiciary and the community.
The judicial complex represents a significant investment in Maryland County’s infrastructure and the justice sector.
Citizens of the county have expressed optimism about the project, viewing it as a sign of progress and a commitment by the government to address long-standing challenges in the region’s Judiciary.
As anticipation builds for the January 20 groundbreaking ceremony, the project is being celebrated as a transformative development for Maryland County and a milestone in Liberia’s commitment to strengthening its judicial system.
