Central Monrovia-based Down Town Football Club has made history by securing promotion to the Liberia Football Association (LFA) First Division for the 2025/26 season, completing a remarkable rise from debutants in the Second Division to one of the top league clubs in the country.
Founded in 2014, Down Town FC spent much of its early years flying under the radar, but the club’s fortunes changed dramatically over the past two seasons. In 2024, they gained promotion to the LFA Second Division, marking their first significant step into national football. Building on the momentum of that achievement, the Central Monrovia-based club went on to make an even more impressive statement in the 2024/25 season, securing their place in Liberia’s topflight league after just one season in the Second Division.
This remarkable feat was clinched on Tuesday, when Down Town FC defeated Jubilee FC 2-1 at the Samuel Kanyon Doe Sports Complex practice pitch. The win not only sealed their promotion to the LFA First Division but also ensured they would finish among the top three teams, alongside Wologizi FC, the champions of the 2024/25 season, and Jubilee FC, who had already secured their place.
With two games remaining in the season, Down Town’s total of 47 points proved insurmountable for fourth-placed Margibi FC, confirming their promotion ahead of time.
The match against Jubilee FC proved to be a thrilling encounter. Down Town took an early lead in the 26th minute thanks to a well-taken goal from Wilson Jackson. Despite Jubilee’s best efforts, they responded before the halftime whistle, equalizing the score to 1-1.
However, Down Town’s resilience in the second half paid off. Suliaman Sesay, one of the standout players of the season, scored the decisive goal, putting his side back in front and ultimately sealing the win. Despite pressure from Jubilee, Down Town’s defense stood firm, and they managed to hold on for the 2-1 victory, ensuring their promotion to the First Division.
Though promotion was not the club’s primary goal at the start of the season, Down Town FC’s consistent performances throughout the campaign saw them rise to the occasion. Their quick adaptation to the demands of the Second Division and their competitive spirit underlined their ability to now challenge for the top tier in Liberian football.
The team’s promotion marks a significant milestone for the club, not just for their on-field success but also for the footballing community in Central Monrovia. Down Town now joins Wologizi FC and Jubilee FC in the LFA First Division, a testament to their hard work and determination.
As they prepare for the challenges of the topflight league, Down Town FC’s rise to prominence sends a powerful message to other clubs in the Second Division that with ambition and perseverance, any team can break through to the highest level of Liberian football.
