Delayed Championship Scheduled With Financial Condition

After more than three months of delay, the Liberia National Chess Championship is now slated to begin on April 12, 2025, pending the availability of necessary funding.
The Liberia Chess Federation (LCF), in collaboration with its organizing committee, announced on Sunday April 6, 2025 that the tournament which is Liberia’s largest national chess event will only proceed as scheduled if the Government of Liberia and other partners provide the financial support required to stage the event.
Originally planned for December 2024, the championship was postponed due to financial constraints. The LCF leadership is now optimistic that with the proposed date, a successful tournament can be held, provided all logistical and financial needs are met in time.
This year’s event will also see the introduction of new categories, including a Cadets Championship for players under age 12, and the Youth Championship for participants under 18 and Senior category for retire and inactive players 50 years and above.
The competition will also attract huge attention for the Women’s National Championship which is purposely targeting to promote women and girls with passion for the game to join the country women stars in taking Liberia chess skills to the world.
The rest of the categories for individual and teams’ participation will be featured according to the recent statement issued by the leadership of the federation.
These additions aim to boost inclusivity and encourage participation across all age groups and genders in the growing chess community.
Meanwhile, the LCF will host its 8th General Assembly on May 10, 2025. The Assembly is expected to gather club leaders, delegates, and chess stakeholders to assess the federation’s past activities, map out future directions, and consider governance reforms that could shape the organization’s path in the years ahead.
As Liberia’s chess landscape continues to expand, the coming weeks will determine whether the championship can fulfill its promise of growth and development hinging on the timely support from both public and private sectors.
