The Co-Chairperson of the Bong County Local Government Council has voiced her opposition to the passage of the County Administration’s proposal to renovate the Presidential Palace in Gbarnga and other development plans recently submitted to the County Council for approval.
According to Marvelene Lepukoi, the renovation of the palace and construction of a school in Kolli-ta Wolah are not timely and that they are not pressing development needs of Bongese.
Speaking to newsmen minutes after a Special Session on Monday, April 7, Lepukoi asserted that the US$280,000 approved for the renovation of the Presidential Palace should have been allocated towards strengthening maternal care in the county.
Lepukoi stated that many women across Bong County birth their children under poor health conditions, stressing the importance of enhancing maternal care.
Seven members of the Bong County Council voted to approve the County Administration’s recent proposal for the renovation of the Presidential Palace, the construction of a school in Kolli-ta Wolah and renovation of public facilities recently destroyed by windstorm in the tune of US$385,000.
Marvelene Lepukoi along with Quita Sibley-Miller voted against the proposal on grounds that it was not timely.
During the session, the Local Council chairman, Aaron Sackie-Fenlah, emphasized the significance of the projects, citing their value in promoting both socio-economic growth and cultural preservation in Bong County.
The Bong County Local Government Council Chairperson underscored the historical importance of the Presidential Palace, stating, “This building is a landmark project in the County. Its rehabilitation is not just about bricks and mortar—it’s about reclaiming a part of our identity.”
He further revealed that the proposed Junior High School in Kolli-Ta Wolah Town will feature classrooms, administrative offices, and basic science and computer labs.
