President Joseph Boakai has signed the Book of Condolence for the late Holiness Pope Francis, who died on April 20, 2025.
The solemn signing ceremony was held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at the Vatican Embassy, on Old CID Road, Mamba Point.
The event brought together high-ranking government officials, members of the clergy, priests and nuns, diplomats, and other dignitaries, all united in paying their final respects to a revered global spiritual leader.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, President Boakai described Pope Francis as “A great man who was very concerned about humanity and the welfare of people.”
He added that it was a blessing to have met the late Pope Francis and reflected on his legacy of humility, compassion, and advocacy for the marginalized.
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, made history as the first Jesuit and the first Latin American pope.
His papacy, which began in 2013, was marked by a deep commitment to social justice, climate action, and interfaith dialogue.
He championed the cause of refugees and the poor, frequently called for peace in conflict zones, and emphasized the need for a more inclusive and caring Catholic Church.
Around the world, the pope’s death has sparked an outpouring of grief and reflection, as global leaders, religious communities, and citizens remember his dedication to bridging divides and promoting dignity for all.
As Liberia joins the rest of the world in mourning, President Boakai extended his heartfelt condolences to the Vatican, the global Catholic community, and all those touched by the life and ministry of Pope Francis.
