LEAD-Monrovia Football Academy’s U15 female team has been crowned Champions of the 2019 USA Cup in Minnesota, United States of America.
The young female squad defeated Vardar United 7-6 in post-match spot kick after 2-2 draw during regular time in the grand final.
The Academy’s U-15 girls’ team was invited by Major League Soccer (MLS) club, Minnesota United, to participate in the 35th edition of the USA Cup in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.
MFA’s U-15 female’s team is the first Liberian team in history to participate in the USA Cup.
The USA Cup attracts more than 1,000 teams every year, making it one of the biggest youth football tournaments in the world. It is held annually at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis.
MFA started the tournament with flying colors with an emphatic 8-1 demolishing in their first match.
The team grew in confidence as they triumphed 7-0 in their second match before securing a much needed 5-2 win in their third match of the tournament. They repeated another heroic performance in the quarter finals as they won 7-1 to take them to the next stage of the tournament. Unto the semis, MFA girls managed a 1-0 win which set the stage for them to play the grand final for the first time in Liberia’s history. The All Liberian female U-15 team went on to win the crown after 2-2 which later set them up for a post match penalty.
