The Bomi County Community College yesterday, began a two-day intensive refresher training for lecturers and administrative staff of the College.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with this paper, the Bomi Community College’s President Zobon Normon stated that the training is intended to upgrade the teaching competence of lecturers and administrative staff of the Institution.
According to Dr Normon, the training will focus on classroom management and effective teaching which is intended for members of the School’s faculty.
The Bomi Community College President disclosed that Dr Semen Capehart, who is an early childhood development specialist and a retired Lecturer from California in the United States who is highly competent and experienced, will conduct training for lecturers at the College and instructors from other elementary schools in the County.
Dr. Normon, however, disclosed that the service of Dr Chris Tokpah, a Liberian educator based in the United States who currently serves as a Vice President for one of the Community Colleges in America, is a database statistical specialist who will help in conducting training for faculty members at the Community College.
According to him, Dr Tokpah has expressed his willingness to help the institution develop and implore the database system for the registration of students as part of the reform process at the Community College.
He further noted that the two-day training will also focus on refreshing teachers from various elementary, Junior and Senior High institutions in the County to enhance instructors teaching ability in classrooms.
The Bomi Community College’s President, however, noted that the training, which is being conducted with an international educational organization based in the United States, will greatly aid instructors in the County and ensures quality education for students in the County.
Dr. Normon further disclosed that his administration is working with other partner organizations and individuals in the United States to obtain foreign scholarships for students.
“In fact, one of them has already given at least ten scholarships to students of the College initially, and she hopes to increase the numbers to as many as fifty (50) for students at the Community College, he stated.”
Meanwhile, the College President has however disclosed that efforts are being made to solicit support from citizens of the County who are based in the United States of America for adequate support to the College.
The Liberian Senate is currently deliberating on a bill seeking Legislation to grant the Bomi Community College a full-fledged degree-offering University.
The Bill was proffered by members of the Western Region Legislative Caucus including Bomi, Gbarpolu and Grand Cape Mount Counties.
The Bill when passed, will give a University status to the College intended to ease the educational endeavor of students from Bomi, Gbarpolu and Grand Cape Mount Counties.
The Bill is being sponsored by Senator Alex Tyler of Bomi County and Chair of the Western Region Legislative Caucus, Senators Dabbah Mabande Varpilah, Simeon Boima Taylor of Grand Cape Mount and Senators Amara Mohammed Konneh, Gbotoe Kanneh of Gbarpolu County and Senator Edwin Melvin Snowe of Bomi County.
