The National president of the Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA), Bonor Varmah, underscored the critical role of the legal profession in upholding democracy, justice, and the rule of law.
Addressing an audience of legal professionals, public officials, and civil society stakeholders, Cllr. Varmah noted that the assembly serves as a constitutional mandate and a vital opportunity for reflection, strategic planning, and recommitment to the ethical and professional standards of legal practice in Liberia.
Describing the gathering as more than a formality, Cllr. Varmah noted that the LNBA remains a strong pillar in the legal framework of Liberia, adding that their role as advocates, defenders of human rights, and promoters of justice cannot be overstated.
In his keynote remarks, the Bar Association president welcomed participants warmly and called for active, constructive engagement throughout the assembly’s deliberations.
He emphasized that the challenges confronting Liberia’s justice system including judicial independence, access to legal representation, and accountability for past and present injustices demand urgent, collective action from the legal community.
“We are the guardians of justice, the voice for the voiceless, and the architects of a legal system that must serve all Liberians fairly and equitably,” he said.
Cllr. Varmah urged his colleagues to seize the moment as a “call to duty,” challenging them to work together in strengthening the justice system, advocating for reforms, and ensuring that legal institutions remain accountable and transparent.
He described the two-day assembly as a crucial platform for professional development and decision-making that will shape the course of legal practice in the country.
“Let our discussions lead to concrete resolutions. Let us recommit ourselves to the highest standards of legal practice and professional ethics,” Varmah said.
Concluding his address, the LNBA president formally declared the 2025 Annual General Assembly open and expressed confidence in the outcome of the deliberations.
“May our deliberations be fruitful, and may we continue to uphold the integrity and values of the legal profession in Liberia,” he affirmed.
The Assembly is expected to include panel discussions, workshops, and strategy sessions focused on legal reform, judicial performance, human rights, and professional ethics.
