The Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) has announced the launch of Operation True Guardian, a comprehensive security operation aimed at curbing rising criminal activity in the Western Counties — Grand Cape Mount, Bomi, and Gbarpolu.
The operation is set to commence at the end of March 2025.
Speaking at a press conference in Monrovia, AFL’s Deputy Chief of Public Affairs, Major El-Dorado Nyanti Jebboe, disclosed that the decision to launch the operation stems from a significant increase in illicit activities, including the cross-border smuggling of arms, drugs, and humans.
Major Jebboe emphasized that Liberia’s porous borders and limited enforcement capabilities have allowed these illegal operations to flourish, compromising national security and creating an atmosphere of fear and instability within border communities.
“The absence of a consistent military presence in these regions has emboldened criminal networks, allowing them to operate with impunity,” Major Jebboe stated.
“This has made it critical for the Ministry of National Defense and the Chief of Staff of the AFL to adopt a coordinated and strategic approach to address these security challenges.”
In addition to land-based threats, Major Jebboe revealed that Liberia’s territorial waters have seen a rise in maritime crimes, including illegal fishing and piracy.
Local anglers have reported increasing encounters with illegal fishing vessels, which threaten their livelihoods and deplete the country’s marine resources.
To combat these issues, ‘Operation True Guardian’ will involve intensified border patrols, enhanced marine surveillance, and increased collaboration with local communities and law enforcement agencies.
The AFL aims to deter criminal activity while fostering trust and cooperation among local populations.
“The high command remains committed to restoring stability and safeguarding Liberia’s borders and marine resources,” Major Jebboe concluded.
“This operation will send a clear message that Liberia will not tolerate illegal activities within its territory.”
