Gov’t Relocates Red-Light Market Today

The Ministries Public Works (MPW) and the Internal Affairs (MIA) in collaboration with the Monrovia and Paynesville City Corporation will today commence the relocation of the Red-light and Gorbachev Markets.
However, the relocation process comes admits series of protests regarding the filthiness of the markets and blamed the PCC and LMA for the continuous delays in removing the overstayed garbage from the Gorbachev and the Red light Markets
Report had it that the relocation of the most densely populated area of Red-light to the 14th Gorbachev market in Omega in Paynesville, is part of the decongestion process and allows for the smooth road construction work of the Coca-Cola to ELWA corridor.
The construction of the Omega Market was birthed during the regime of former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf when the government envisioned a modernized market structure in that part of the county and completed the contract with increase capacity for marketers by President Weah recently.
The Red-light and Gorbachev held a meeting with the MIA, Public Works and PCC where it was agreed that the relocation process begins today, Monday, July 12, 2021.
The joint security team comprised of the Liberia National Police (LNP), the Immigration and Fire Services are aiding the various government’s institution in the relocation process while the Armed Forces of Liberia is leading the charge.
The delay in the construction of the stretch of road between Coco Cola factory and ELWA Junction has been blamed on the huge presence of marketers in the Red Light area; something which has now sparked public concern with the Legislature precisely the House of Representatives questioning the prolong delay for the completion of the road construction.
Meanwhile, a team of government institutions headed by the MPW along with the MCC and PCC on Saturday, July 10, embarked on a demolition process of all of the makeshift structures in the Red-light Market following weeks of negotiation with Liberia Marketing Cooperation (LMA) and marketers.
