The Head of Liberia’s steering committee for the Establishment of War and Economics Crime Court Tiawan Gongloe says, Liberia will not be used as a “Paradise for crimes.”
He said though the country has become a paradise for thieves, but will not become a paradise or home for criminals where perpetrators will go with impunity.
Gongloe made the comments when he spoke to the Voice of America (VOA) on Friday, June 4 from Ganta, Nimba County ahead of the petitioning ceremony for the establishment of a war and economic crimes court in Liberia scheduled for Wednesday, June 24, 2021.
He was also responding to the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR) leader Prince Johnson’s statement that Nimba is not place where people go to discuss Liberia’s criminal tribunal matters.
Gongloe, however went further that Nimbaians were unanimous in their decision and are supportive of the establishment of the war crimes tribunal in the country pointing out, “Nimbaians are in full support of the court and we will make sure that criminals are answerable for the crimes they commit.”
Sen. Johnson is among those accused according to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) final report of killings, extortions, massacres, destruction of properties, force recruitments, assaults, abductions, tortures, forced labor and rape.
