ECOWAS Suspends Mali Membership Over Latest Coup

ECOWAS has suspended Mali’s membership over the latest coup and the implication of this decision was part of the Accra Summit on the Mali crisis and regional security.
ECOWAS suspends mali until it returns to democratic rule following the may 24 “coup within a coup” in the country.
Ghana’s Foreign Minister Shirley Botchwey said this was one of the decisions reached at Sunday’s Extraordinary summit held in Accra, after coup leader Col. Assisi Goita assumed the presidency of the Mali transitional government established in the aftermath of a previous coup in August 2020.
Col. Goita was invited to the Accra ECOWAS summit. Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonatan, the ECOWAS chief Mediator on the Mali crisis, was in Bamako last week for talks with Goita and other Malian leaders.
