Rising Youth Mentorship Initiative, in collaboration with Medica-Liberia on Wednesday last week concluded a one-day Sexual Exploitation and Abuse Worship with several participants from the partner schools expressing optimism about the danger of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse on the Liberian society.
The participants, mainly female students and social workers from in and around Monrovia, expressed regret that some of their fellow students have suffered from the various kinds of abuses.
The students, from surrounding schools in Paynesville and its surrounding want authorities at the Ministry of Education and the government institute measures that will help curtail those various abuses perpetrated by their male counterparts and even school administrators and teachers.
The workshop was held at the YWCA Compound in Congo Town under the theme, ‘Strengthening Prevention and Response to Sexual Exploitation and Abuse in Schools’, with key focus on the protection of female students.
RYMI Project Consultant, Sele Max Fuah called for commitment from school administrators to make sure that they protect the female students, mainly those under-age students to avoid violating their rights. He said, abusing the students sexually will actually have the propensity to delay their education, caused severe illnesses and even lead them to death.
Mother Pattern School of Sciences Interm at RYMI Kou Amelia Dahn who is also a social worker at RYMI explained the getting the students who have been violated to explain their stories are some of the difficult situations.
She further lauded the school administrators for confiding in them, adding, there had been cordial working relationship between the schools and RYMI.
Meanwhile, Sassy Hessou who presented on a power point, admonished the students to remain focused and compute with their male counterparts. In a group work coordinated by Sessy, the students were seen making separate individual’s presentation on the danger of sea if it is not addressed adequately.
Monrovia City Corporation-MCC Executive Secretary in the office of the mayor Maakai J. Moore-Juwle welcomed the mood by RYMI assured them of the mcc supports in the areas of curtailing sexual abuses.
She also called for the extension of training in other parts of the country so as to enable other female students have the opportunity to express themselves about the sexual abuses perpetrated against them by their male counterparts.
Physical injuries, causing, trauma, and rape had been widely observed in most of the Liberian schools. On the questions and answer session, most of the participants stressed the need for counseling session at the schools to avoid students being constantly abused.
