The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has taken a major step in strengthening Liberia’s digital infrastructure by initiating a site assessment for the country’s second submarine cable, the Amílcar Cabral Cable.
This project, which could see the cable landing in Buchanan, Grand Bassa County, is expected to significantly enhance Liberia’s internet resilience and connectivity.
According to the release, the move comes in response to the 2024 internet blackout, when a submarine cable that cut outside Liberia’s borders left the nation digitally isolated.
The release stated that, unlike Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, and Nigeria, whose multiple fiber redundancies ensured continued connectivity, Liberia’s dependence on a single submarine cable underscored the urgent need for infrastructure expansion.
“President Joseph Boakai administration has made the second submarine cable a priority. The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, under the leadership of Minister Sekou M. Kromah, is working closely with stakeholders to ensure the successful implementation of this transformative project,” the release added.
The initiative is backed by ECOWAS and the World Bank, whose support underscores the regional and international commitment to Liberia’s digital development. Private sector partners are also playing a crucial role, bringing expertise and investment to the endeavor.
The release mentioned that, as part of the ongoing assessment, five potential landing sites along Buchanan’s coastline have been identified: Small Fanti Town, Big Fanti Town, Upper Buchanan, Mother/Reverend Dukuly Memorial Site and additional strategic locations.
Final site selection will be based on technical evaluations and stakeholder consultations. Once completed, the Amílcar Cabral Cable is expected to not only fortify Liberia’s internet infrastructure but also drive economic growth, particularly in Grand Bassa County and the Southeast.
A robust fiber-optic network will expand access to digital services, support businesses, and create new opportunities for innovation and job creation.
With this initiative, the Liberian government is taking a decisive step toward a more connected and digitally inclusive future, ensuring that reliable and affordable internet services reach all citizens.
